Newbie Project #14:
Creating your own Full Page Ads
|
The purpose of this project is
to explore a few different methods that can be used
to create your own FPAs. These self created full page
ads can be a very useful tool in your advertising
arsenal. Having full control over the designs of these
allows you to customize the sponsor link presentation
to whatever you feel your traffic will be most comfortable
with. Now let's move on to some different approaches
a person might take.
1. Graphic intense FPA's
This type of page is not for everyone as it does take
some skill and talent to create good looking and effective
graphics. However, with that in mind, an amateurish
looking odd size graphic might help the page depending
on the niche being advertised. The big things to remember
when creating your own graphics is to try and keep
the colors somewhat simple so that they will be viewable
without color distortions on older systems and of
course image size. You want your images to load fast
but yet still look as good as possible. This usually
requires a bit of "playing" around with image compression
and so forth from within your graphics program.
2. Text only FPA's
This is often one of the more "powerful" FPA types
in my opinion. This is because you have a chance to
"talk" with the surfer and get them a bit more worked
up than what some images alone are capable of. A bonus
is that this type page loads very fast and can be
very keyword rich for the search engines. There is
of course different approaches a person might take
such as "first person type text, impact or action
statements(short and to the point while telling the
surfer to do something such as click here), short
story style and so on. What you do always want to
do is make the first few statements either drive the
surfer to click right away or entice them enough to
keep reading and click further down the page and make
the actual links themselves highly visible.
3. Combination of text and graphics
These pages usual consist of a combination of your
own text and then sponsor supplied graphics such as
banners or buttons. While these pages can be very
effective, you should still keep a few things in mind
such as image placement and link location. For instance,
in most cases you would want a few good text lines
at top for the search engines as well as the slow
modem users. This should be followed by a large text
link. Next, the images can be placed in different
locations with text above, below and beside them.
Always link your banners and buttons of course but
be careful not to "overlink" your text. By this I
mean if to much of the text is linked, the page then
can easily become "spammy" looking and ultimately,
perform at a lower than expected rate.
4. Making them unique!
Obviously if you make these pages yourself, they are
going to be unique to the web itself but there still
are other ways as well to make your pages "Stand out"
from the rest such as java tricks, multi colored table
cells, other options for surfers. With java, you can
have links that flash, backgrounds that change, bookmark
scripts, time-day display and so forth. While some
of these things might not seem the most useful, if
they make a surfer remember the page and get the "this
is new feeling", you're one step closer to getting
them at ease enough to possibly buy something from
your page that you recommend. Multi colored cells
within your tables can also had a huge visual variety
to your page without having to use any images or very
few at least. You can get some easily labeled table
codes that you can manipulate for your own uses here.
Other options can consist of different links to something
non related to the main focus of the page, "fun" links
such as to online mini games or whatever, your own
linklist, tgp, free site links and so on. Generally
just things you do not normally see on sponsor provided
FPAs.
Consideration points:
A. A FPA does not have to be for one single site.
You can advertise multiple sites or sponsors from
one page. B. You make the rules on these as far as
pop ups, blurs and so forth. (dependent of course
on where you use them) C. Try to design for the lowest
common denominator (so the page views correctly in
as many different browsers as possible).
